Woman of the Week: Leah Blewett

[sc:shn-ad1]

Woman of the Week is a designated space to celebrate and have a chance to learn about a complete and wonderful stranger and to honor and soak in some of her wisdom. This week, we are so lucky to get a closer look into the wonderful woman that is Leah Blewett. She has written so many amazing and hilarious things for Skirt Collective and we’ve truly enjoyed getting to know her through her writing. We needed to know more about her. This week, we’re celebrating her in all her glory (and love for fine foods).

1. What did five-year-old Leah want to be when she grew up?

Five-year-old Leah, what do you want to be when you grow up?
“A mom.”
Aww, isn’t that sweet??

Five-year-old Leah, what do you want to be when you grow up?

“Famous.”

My stars, isn’t she precocious??

Five-year-old Leah was kind of a brat (and would be wildly disappointed to learn that 31-year-old Leah is neither famous nor a mom.  Yet.)

2.  What is the most important lesson your mother taught you?

She’s going to be reading this, so I better make it good (Hi, Mom!)…When I was a kid and I felt sad, or alone, or things weren’t going my way, my mother taught me to think of my favorite places in the world and imagine things still happening there, even though I couldn’t see them.  Even today, when I feel lonely or sad, I picture Acadia, or Rome, or Santa Monica.  It’s incredibly soothing to imagine the waves hitting the rocky pink granite of Maine’s Atlantic coast, or the stylish Italians slurping espresso ristretto and careening around on Vespas, or the Ferris wheel on the pier circling up to the sky and back, even though I can’t see it.

3.  What is a song that brings you back to a moment in time?  What is that moment?

My geek is showing, but I’ve never been able to listen to The Beatles’ “Saw Her Standing There” without instantly feeling like a kid again, sitting next to my sister in the back seat of Dad’s Toyota driving home at night, laughing like lunatics when he changed the words to “Saw Her Underwear.”  (Try it; it’s hilarious.  At least, it is when you’re seven.)
