Valentine’s Day is nigh, do you feel it? LOVE IS IN THE AIR. No, sorry, that’s just pollution.
If there’s one thing you should do this weekend, it’s practice some self-care. It’s an important part of maintaining your mental, emotional, and physical health however so don’t ignore it. Use V Day as an excuse to show some self-love to yourself. Girl, you eeeeearned it.
Here are some ideas for how to take the relationship with yourself to the next level:
10) Take yourself on a hot date.
Look in the mirror before you go and make direct eye contact, “Damn self, you’re beautiful.” Then, go out to eat. If you don’t want to sit at a restaurant by yourself, just get takeout and sit somewhere scenic. Or on your couch.
Oooor go see a movie by yourself. Give yourself the FULL experience of going to the movies by loudly proclaiming which movie trailers show promise and which suck.
9) Buy yourself something from a thrift store or antique shop.
I have personally been trying to avoid buying from fast fashion retailers with limited success (okay, to be honest, with almost no success). But thrifting can be really fun and a great way to find hidden treasures. Same goes for antique shops. It takes a little work but once you find something, you’ll be glad you spent the time sifting through moth balls and grandma clothes.
Nature!! The great outdoors. The place where you probably don’t have WIFI. It’s okay. It’s time to disconnect from your tech-dependent life. I mean, try not to get lost though since you don’t have WIFI. You only have SKY SKY.
7) Cook yourself a meal.
Feed the beast. Do you have a Pinterest board with hundreds of recipes you have never even tried making? Get yourself together, kid. It’s time to take the next step and actually make something. Okay, it’s cool if you just make five types of brownies. You’re an adult and you get to choose whether or not you want brownies for dinner.
6) Do your nails.
Or have your nails done if you want to spend the money on that. Personally, I like to take the time to focus on doing my own nails because it’s a quiet, relaxing activity.
5) Do something creative and set aside time for it.
I.e. painting your nails. But it can be anything. Hobby time is a good time.
Memories are bound to fade so why not write down some things? Even if your journal is just a few sentences and monstly doodles, it’s still an awesome way to record your life.
I use the internet and this website as my personal journal so I don’t have a physical one but journaling is a great mental exercise and everyone could use a little more reflection and thoughtfulness in their day.
3) Meditate or do yoga.
I, for one, have never been able to successfully meditate because my mind is a on a racetrack to nowhere constantly. Yoga, however, has been a great way to achieve mindfulness because it gives me something external to focus on and makes me hyper-aware of my body, but in a healthy, positive way.
2) Connect with your friends and write letters.
Letters! Where did they go? They melted into the ether when the internet was born but you, buddy, you can bring them back. Spend some time writing your friends a little Valentine’s Day card.
1) Be shameless.
With your time. With your binge watching. Give yourself the gift of no-guilt WHATEVER. Within reason, I mean. Don’t just go steal a bunch of stuff and say, well an article told me to do this without SHAME or GUILT so HERE I AM, WORLD.
Just allow yourself to really relax and not feel the tug of outside responsibilties or feeling obligated to other people if you’re able to, even if it’s just a few minutes of alone time. You deserve it.
